What kind of Michigan fish is this?

I've caught a few fish out of the Kalamazoo River (SW Michigan) that I thought maybe were baby carp, due to their "scaley" look, however I think they may be trout? They were only about 6-7 inches long. They squealed when I removed the hook. I'm a fairly inexperienced fisherman and don't know much about fish am just wondering what they are. Thanks for any help!
