What is the reason dogs are beaten, slowly hanged or ignited to death when being killed for meat?

Asian (Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese) restaurants that serve dog meat frequently torture dogs to death. I heard that they do this in the belief that the meat will taste better if the dogs are first tortured.
